Dehydration is a common problem for seniors, often leading to hospitalization. It can also cause other major health problems like kidney stones, blood clot complications, passing out, rapid but weak pulse, and lowered blood pressure. Being properly hydrated is also very important for certain medications to work.
Sometimes seniors can be resistant to increasing their fluid intake so here are some tips to overcome that resistance.
- Remember there are many sources of fluids
Some older adults don’t like to drink just plain water, so offer different beverages such as tea, coffee, fruit juice and sweetened beverages. Remember too, that many fruits and vegetables also contain water.
- Keep water easily accessible
Another good idea is to make it easier for seniors to serve themselves. Try to put a lightweight pitcher of water or cup near to them so that they can feel free to serve themselves at any time they want without “bothering” anyone.
- Experiment with beverages at different temperatures
Everyone has his/her preferred tastes, either hot or cold drinks. Try different types to learn which tastes your loved ones prefer such as warming up juices or serving iced tea or coffee.
- Try something savoury
Another good tip is to make savoury foods such as hot soup broth. This is a good method and easy to do for your loved ones or for yourself.
- Make popsicles
Homemade popsicles are always a good idea to give some different options. You can easily make them from fruit juice or a mix of fruit juice and water.
- Offer smoothies, milkshakes, Ensure, sports drinks
On occasion, some older adults may really resist drinking fluids, but you can try these different solutions if they like these flavours or textures.
