Being alone doesn’t necessarily mean that your life will be lonely. However, loneliness creeps up on all of us from time to time. Sometimes aging alone is planned and sometimes it happens unexpectedly. We have come up with a short list of ways to try and keep the loneliness away.

Get Involved

Depending on where you live many old age communities and retirement areas are full of clubs, activities and classes. There is often something for everyone. It is a great way to make connections and keep yourself busy.  You can likely partake in activities such as; darts, bowling, cards and swimming. You can join clubs like; gardening club, book club and knitting club. There could be classes that get together weekly including; cooking class, exercise class and dance class.

Get Out

One of the best things for your mental health is a change of scenery. Whether you go out alone or with a friend or two, getting out and enjoying a drive, a restaurant, shopping or the outdoors can boost your spirits.

Help Others

Use all of that knowledge and insight that you have gained throughout your lifetime to help others around you such as students and the less fortunate. You can join charity organizations and soup kitchens to help out the less fortunate. It's a great way to get out of the house as well as uplift your community. You can teach classes based on your previous employment to students and offer one on one tutoring. The knowledge you pass on  can help prepare them for their careers.

Learn About Computers

Nowadays living far away from loved ones is a bit easier thanks to the power of the internet. Video Calls have become quite common in our household. Most of my children's grandparents live 14 hours away. With video calls our daughters feel connected with their grandparents and get excited to see them. You can keep a great relationship with your family members through video calls. You can be there during special occasions, have daily/weekly chats. If you don’t know much about the internet or how to work video calls you can call internet techs and get some information.
